Lovable vs Bolt vs v0: Which Builds a Full App From One Prompt?

If you want a working app with login and a database from one prompt, start with Lovable. If you want to pick your own framework and work close to the code, try Bolt. If the interface is the main thing and you're happy on Next.js and Vercel, use v0.

No tool gets you to "done" in one prompt. The first prompt gets you a scaffold. The next ten prompts decide whether you ship, and that's where the pricing models start to matter.

The stack and backend rows come from a recent three-way comparison. It says Bolt Cloud added database, auth, storage and hosting in 2026. The billing row is from a pricing guide that puts it simply: Lovable sells credits, v0 sells dollars of credit at model rates, Bolt sells raw tokens.

Lovable: the most "finished" first result

Lovable's pitch is that you describe an app and it wires up the frontend, database, auth and deploy for you. The backend is Supabase, covering auth, database, storage and edge functions. For a first-time builder this is the shortest path from idea to a URL you can send to a friend.

The catch is Supabase. Some Supabase configuration steps can still need technical troubleshooting. Expect at least one moment where you paste an error back into the chat and hope.

On cost, the Free plan gives 5 daily credits and public projects, and Pro is $25/month for 100+ credits with private projects, custom domains and code access. Free daily credits max out at 30 per month, so the free tier is enough for a demo, not a real build. You can check the current breakdown here, and then confirm it on Lovable's own pricing page before you pay.

Bolt: more control, more meter-watching

Bolt runs in a browser IDE, and it's the most framework-agnostic of the three. If you already know you want Svelte or Astro, this is the one that won't push you toward React.

It bills in tokens, and that's the thing to understand. Bolt publishes no tokens-per-prompt figure, so nobody can honestly say how many apps a plan buys. Token use grows with project size, so the same small edit costs more in a big app than a small one.

As of late October, one review lists Free at $0, Pro at $25 a month for 10M tokens with rollover, and Teams at $30 per member. The free plan has a 300K daily cap, Bolt branding on sites and no custom domain. That daily cap can stop you mid-build, so don't start a big prompt late in the day.

v0: the best-looking start, with a Vercel-shaped footprint

v0 produces clean React, Next.js and shadcn/ui output. Older comparisons call it frontend-only. That's out of date. A February 2026 update added Git, an editor, database connectivity and agentic workflows. Reviews still disagree on how far it goes, so treat "full app from one prompt" as the weakest claim for v0 and test it yourself.

Pricing has moved around, so read v0's own pricing docs before budgeting. The listed plans are Free, Plus at $30/user/month, Business at $100/user/month and Enterprise. The $20 Premium plan is being sunsetted and isn't available to new users. New free signups get a one-time $5 credit offer, while existing Free users keep $5 monthly. The free plan also has a 7-message daily limit.

There's one more cost. v0 and Vercel bill separately, and the v0 subscription covers AI generation only.

One prompt to paste into all three

Run the same prompt in each tool so you're comparing the tools, not your wording. Name the features, cap the scope, and ask the tool to tell you what it didn't do.

Build a web app called "Shelf Swap" where neighbors lend and borrow tools.

Must have:
- Email sign-up and login
- Users can list an item (name, photo, short description)
- A browse page with search
- A "Request to borrow" button that sends the owner a message (a simple inbox page is fine)
- A profile page listing each user's items

Design: clean, mobile-friendly, one accent color.
Seed 5 sample items so the browse page isn't empty.
Do NOT add payments, maps, ratings or anything not listed.
When done, tell me what you set up and what I still need to configure myself.

How to run the test in an afternoon

  1. Use the free tiers first. Don't pay until you know which tool fits your project.
  2. Paste the prompt once per tool. Don't tweak it between runs.
  3. Test the boring paths. Sign up, log out, log back in, add an item with a photo, send a request. Auth and data are where these builds break.
  4. Open a second browser profile. Check that user B can't edit user A's items. Generated apps often skip permission checks, so ask the tool to review them.
  5. Make one small change. Ask for "move the search bar above the filters" and see what it costs in credits or tokens. That's your real unit price.
  6. Connect GitHub before you invest further. Having the code in your own repo makes it easier to leave later.

The costs that surprise people

  • Fix loops. Whatever the meter is, you pay for the AI's failed attempts too. When a fix doesn't work twice, stop and describe the bug more precisely instead of re-asking.
  • Hosting and backend. Lovable's plan bundles hosting, but v0 apps usually add a Vercel bill and a separate database bill.
  • Plans change. v0 renamed its $30 tier from Team to Plus in July 2026. Bolt and Lovable have also adjusted plans. Treat any price in an article, including this one, as a starting point.

Which one should you pick?

  • No coding background, want a working MVP: Lovable.
  • Some coding background, want to choose the framework: Bolt.
  • Already on Next.js and Vercel, or UI polish matters most: v0.
  • Not sure: run the prompt above in all three on free tiers, then keep the one whose code you'd be willing to open.

Many people end up combining them. They generate a UI in v0, then build the app in a tool that handles the backend. That's a legitimate workflow, as long as you keep the code in GitHub.

FAQ

Which is best for beginners in a Lovable vs Bolt comparison?

Lovable, for most people. It bundles the backend and hosting, so there are fewer accounts to set up. Bolt gives you more framework choice, but it also gives you more decisions to make and a token meter that's harder to predict.

Can v0 build a full app now?

It can get further than it used to. Sources describe database connectivity and Git support added in early 2026, but they disagree on how complete the experience is. Test it with the prompt above before you commit, especially if you aren't using Vercel.

Can I use the free plans to build something real?

You can build a prototype, but not much more. Lovable's free tier is capped at 30 credits a month, Bolt's has a 300K-token daily cap and branding, and v0's free plan limits you to 7 messages a day. Use them to choose a tool, then pay for one.
